Arrival in Marrakech, the Red City

The journey begins the moment you land: we meet you and bring you inside the ochre walls to your riad, a house with a hushed courtyard a few steps from the roar of the square. Marrakech was founded around 1070 as a fortified Almoravid camp, and for a thousand years it has kept the same pulse — mint tea poured from a foot above the glass, the call to prayer, red lime plaster shifting colour with the light. In the evening you drift down to Jemaa el-Fna, where orange-juice sellers, storytellers and the smoke of the grills make a theatre that never quite stops. There is nothing to decode, only to walk through; and when the lanterns come on, the whole square turns to gold.

Day 02 · Dades Valley · 1,562 m

The Road of Kasbahs: Ait Ben Haddou and Skoura

You leave Marrakech while the light is still low and climb the Tizi n'Tichka, Morocco's highest pass at 7,415 feet, where the road knots into hairpins and earthen villages cling to the slope. On the far side, at Ait Ben Haddou, you stop before a ksar of mud and straw that rises in tiers toward a hilltop: a UNESCO site, a set for Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones, but above all a caravan fortress that has lived for centuries on the road of gold and salt. You go on to Ouarzazate, the 'gate of the desert', and enter the Dades Valley among honey-coloured kasbahs until the walls close into the famous gorge. The rock turns copper as the sun goes down.

Day 04 · Marrakech · 466 m

From the Dunes to Marrakech via Agdz and the Draa

You wake before the sun and climb the nearest dune: the sky moves from grey to rose to gold, and when the disc breaks the horizon the crests light up one after another as if drawn in with a brush. After breakfast at camp, the long road home becomes a journey in itself: Rissani, cradle of the Alaouite dynasty that still reigns today, with its teeming souk; then the spectacular Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river, a ribbon of a hundred thousand palms among mud kasbahs that follow the water into the desert. You cross the Anti-Atlas again and finally the Tichka; when the red walls of Marrakech reappear at dusk, the desert already feels like a distant dream.

Day 05 · Marrakech · 466 m

Marrakech at Your Own Pace

Drive — on foot within the medina

A day with no schedule, which is perhaps the most honest way to know Marrakech. You might return to a souk half-glimpsed in passing, haggle for an Atlas rug, follow your nose to a spice stall; or retreat into the calm of a hammam, the steam bath that has been a weekly rite here for centuries, and step out remade. Some choose a cooking class to learn the tajine and the secret of ras el hanout; others simply sit in a café and watch the city work. The medina, UNESCO-listed since 1985, is not something you tour: you inhabit it, even for a single day. As the sun drops, the last mint tea on the terrace tastes of farewell.

Day 06 · Marrakech · 466 m

Farewell to Marrakech

Drive — transfer to the airport

The last morning drifts by at the slow pace of farewells. There is time for a coffee on the terrace, for a final turn among the workshops in search of the right souvenir — a silver teapot, a pair of babouches, a pouch of Taliouine saffron — or simply to let the days spent among kasbahs and dunes settle. Then we take you to the airport. You arrived in a city that felt like a labyrinth and you leave able to read it: its sounds, its smells, the hidden logic of its lanes. Morocco, they say here, is never visited only once; and as the plane lifts from the red plain, you understand that it is true.
