From Casablanca to the Red City

Morocco greets you from its Atlantic metropolis. Before you leave it, the Hassan II Mosque takes the measure of the modern country: completed in 1993, it stands partly over the water and its minaret nears seven hundred feet — the tallest in the world — a wave of marble and zellige gathering twenty-five thousand worshippers. Then the motorway heads south across the plain of phosphates and citrus, to Marrakech. On arrival you step through the door of a riad and feel the city's roar die against the cool of the courtyard; in the evening you drift down to Jemaa el-Fna, where at sunset lanterns, grills and storytellers come alive. The Red City sets you at once in the right rhythm for the journey.

Day 02 · Marrakech · 466 m

Marrakech in Depth: Palaces and Gardens

Drive — on foot within the medina

With a guide you cross the Marrakech the walls keep hidden: the Koutoubia, whose 12th-century minaret was the model for Seville's Giralda; the Bahia Palace, eighty rooms willed by a grand vizier so that no two would be alike; the Saadian Tombs, sealed for centuries and rediscovered only in 1917 from an aerial photograph. You lose yourself in the maze of the souks — copper, leather, spices in neat cones — where every trade keeps its own lane. In the afternoon the cobalt green of the Majorelle Garden cools the eyes, before the square lights up again. At sunset you climb to a terrace: the rooftops become a red sea, and the snow-topped Atlas closes the horizon.

Ait Ben Haddou, the Valley of Roses and the Dades

You cross the Tizi n'Tichka again and drop to Ait Ben Haddou, the earthen ksar UNESCO has protected since 1987, before passing Ouarzazate and its film studios, the 'Hollywood of the desert'. Then the road enters the Valley of Roses, around Kelaat M'Gouna: here, every May, a festival honours the Damask rose said to have been carried back by pilgrims from Mecca, and from a thousand hedges comes the rosewater that scents the whole region. You follow the Dades Valley among crumbling kasbahs and palm groves, while the rock formations called 'monkey fingers' curl above you. When the gorge closes in, the last light sets the walls glowing like embers.

Day 04 · Merzouga · ~713 m

The Todra Gorge and the Dunes of Merzouga

In the morning you climb back up to the Todra Gorge, where the river has cut a cleft between walls nearly a thousand feet high, so close that at noon they let through only a blade of light; climbers trace routes here from all over Europe. Then the land opens out, the palm groves thin, and the stony hammada gives way to something older: on the horizon rise the first crests of Erg Chebbi, mountains of orange sand over five hundred feet tall. You leave the car at the foot of the dunes and mount a dromedary for the last stretch, the caravan climbing in silence toward the tented camp. On the dune's crest you wait for sunset: the sand shifts from gold to copper to violet, and a silence falls that you can feel in your ears.

Day 05 · Fes · 414 m

From the Erg Back to Fes through Cedars and Peaks

After dawn over the dunes you head north and climb, in reverse, Morocco's great staircase: from sand to snow in a single day. You go back up the Ziz Valley with its sheer palm groves, cross Midelt and its plateau under the Jebel Ayachi, often white-capped into spring. Then the Middle Atlas takes you in again with the cedar forest of Azrou, where curious macaques edge toward the road, and with tidy, alpine Ifrane. In the late afternoon the road drops toward the Saïss plain and Fes reappears, settled into its bowl. To enter the city after days of desert is like returning to another century, among minarets and the smoke of braziers.

Day 06 · Fes · 414 m

Inside Fes el Bali: Madrasas and Tanneries

Drive — on foot within the medina

A guide leads you into the heart of the medina, because alone you truly get lost. You visit the Bou Inania Madrasa, a 14th-century Marinid jewel of cedar, carved plaster and zellige; you pass Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri and held to be the oldest still operating in the world. Then your nose warns you before your eyes: the Chouara tanneries, a honeycomb of stone vats where hides are still dyed with lime, pigeon guano and pomegranate, exactly as in the Middle Ages. They hand you a sprig of mint for the smell, and you watch men standing knee-deep in colour. The point isn't the explanation; it's the wandering. At dusk the lanes empty and only the lamps remain.

Day 07 · Casablanca · ~30 m

From Fes to Casablanca via the Capital, Rabat

The last day brings you back to the ocean, closing the great loop. You leave Fes and drop to Rabat, a calm, green capital on the Bou Regreg: here the Hassan Tower, a minaret left unfinished in 1199 when the sultan who dreamed of the world's largest mosque died, watches over a field of stub columns; opposite, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V glows with onyx and zellige. You stroll the Kasbah of the Oudayas, a quarter of blue-and-white lanes tumbling toward the Atlantic. Then a short drive reaches Casablanca, where the journey began: a perfect loop that touched imperial cities, desert and ocean. In the evening the sea air already tastes of farewell.
