The journey begins the moment you land: we meet you and bring you inside the ochre walls to your riad, a house with a hushed courtyard a few steps from the roar of the square. Marrakech was founded around 1070 as a fortified Almoravid camp, and for a thousand years it has kept the same pulse — mint tea poured from a foot above the glass, the call to prayer, red lime plaster shifting colour with the light. In the evening you drift down to Jemaa el-Fna, where orange-juice sellers, storytellers and the smoke of the grills make a theatre that never quite stops. There is nothing to decode, only to walk through; and when the lanterns come on, the whole square turns to gold.

Day 02 · Marrakech · 466 m

Marrakech in Depth: Palaces and Gardens

Drive — on foot within the medina

With a guide you cross the Marrakech the walls keep hidden: the Koutoubia, whose 12th-century minaret was the model for Seville's Giralda; the Bahia Palace, eighty rooms willed by a grand vizier so that no two would be alike; the Saadian Tombs, sealed for centuries and rediscovered only in 1917 from an aerial photograph. You lose yourself in the maze of the souks — copper, leather, spices in neat cones — where every trade keeps its own lane. In the afternoon the cobalt green of the Majorelle Garden cools the eyes, before the square lights up again. At sunset you climb to a terrace: the rooftops become a red sea, and the snow-topped Atlas closes the horizon.

Day 03 · Dades Valley · 1,562 m

Ait Ben Haddou, the Valley of Roses and the Dades

You cross the Tizi n'Tichka again and drop to Ait Ben Haddou, the earthen ksar UNESCO has protected since 1987, before passing Ouarzazate and its film studios, the 'Hollywood of the desert'. Then the road enters the Valley of Roses, around Kelaat M'Gouna: here, every May, a festival honours the Damask rose said to have been carried back by pilgrims from Mecca, and from a thousand hedges comes the rosewater that scents the whole region. You follow the Dades Valley among crumbling kasbahs and palm groves, while the rock formations called 'monkey fingers' curl above you. When the gorge closes in, the last light sets the walls glowing like embers.

Day 05 · Fes · 414 m

From the Erg Back to Fes through Cedars and Peaks

After dawn over the dunes you head north and climb, in reverse, Morocco's great staircase: from sand to snow in a single day. You go back up the Ziz Valley with its sheer palm groves, cross Midelt and its plateau under the Jebel Ayachi, often white-capped into spring. Then the Middle Atlas takes you in again with the cedar forest of Azrou, where curious macaques edge toward the road, and with tidy, alpine Ifrane. In the late afternoon the road drops toward the Saïss plain and Fes reappears, settled into its bowl. To enter the city after days of desert is like returning to another century, among minarets and the smoke of braziers.

Day 06 · Fes · 414 m

Inside Fes el Bali: Madrasas and Tanneries

Drive — on foot within the medina

A guide leads you into the heart of the medina, because alone you truly get lost. You visit the Bou Inania Madrasa, a 14th-century Marinid jewel of cedar, carved plaster and zellige; you pass Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri and held to be the oldest still operating in the world. Then your nose warns you before your eyes: the Chouara tanneries, a honeycomb of stone vats where hides are still dyed with lime, pigeon guano and pomegranate, exactly as in the Middle Ages. They hand you a sprig of mint for the smell, and you watch men standing knee-deep in colour. The point isn't the explanation; it's the wandering. At dusk the lanes empty and only the lamps remain.

Day 07 · Chefchaouen · 564 m

From Fes to Chefchaouen via Meknes and Volubilis

You leave Fes for Meknes, the Versailles of Morocco built by Moulay Ismail, and stop before the monumental Bab Mansour, a frame of zellige for the entrance to the imperial city. A little farther, Volubilis awaits: the southernmost Roman city on the continent, where between the 1st and 3rd centuries oil was pressed for the empire, today a field of columns and open-air mosaics — Bacchus, Orpheus, the labours of Hercules — surviving eighteen centuries under the sun. You climb to greet Moulay Idriss, a holy town clinging to two hills. Then the road winds up into the Rif, and in the late afternoon Chefchaouen appears: its blue lanes, at the sunset hour, seem to hold the last light like water.

Day 08 · Chefchaouen · 564 m

From the Blue Pearl to Tangier via Tetouan

One last walk through the blue lanes at the hour the city wakes and the cats stretch on the stairs, then you drop from the Rif toward the Mediterranean. You stop at Tetouan, the 'daughter of Granada': its white medina, a UNESCO site, was rebuilt by Andalusian refugees expelled from Spain in the 15th century, and it keeps their architecture, their trades and even their surnames. Then the road runs along the coast to Tangier, where the Mediterranean and the Atlantic touch and Europe is a line on the horizon. You climb to the Kasbah for a last look over the Strait of Gibraltar, as ferries draw white wakes between the two continents and the sun sets on water that has watched Phoenicians, Romans and corsairs pass.

Farewell to Tangier

Drive — transfer to the airport

On the last morning you look at the Strait once more: from here, across a handful of miles of water, Morocco waves to Europe. In nine days you have crossed an entire country — from the red walls of Marrakech to the Sahara dunes, from the thousand-year-old medina of Fes to the mosaics of Volubilis, from the blue of Chefchaouen to the sea at Tangier — and no stretch resembled the last. There is time for a final coffee over the Grand Socco, for a pair of babouches, before the transfer to the airport. Morocco never quite lets you go: it stays in the smell of spices, the colour of raw earth, the silence of the dunes. And as the plane lifts over the Strait, you already know you will return.
